Designers use a variety of structured methods to find out what form a solution will take. However, in the 'fuzzy front-end' of the design process, where the designer has left behind all assumptions and - therefore - starts out with no particular direction, there are very few supports other than the designer's intuition. To build a more robust set of tools to help put a problem in context, I worked with Apeksha Garga, Payaal Patel, and Nikhil Mathew to develop a trend graphing method that will let designers aggregate their contextual research across teams and over time. We also developed a plan for a software platform to enable web-based use of this method.
